Mary Ann Gates, L.Ac.
Acupuncture Practitioner
As a fourth generation Portlander and child of a nurse and a mountaineer, my passions for health and our natural world come easily to me. I am grateful to have found a medicine that recognizes that the laws that rule the seasons, when utilized for healing, have great capacity to bring our bodies closer to ease and wellbeing. I have a deep love for practicing East Asian Medicine and I work daily to improve my craft.
In my training, I focused on the gentlest styles of acupuncture as well as work with non-insertive tools because that is what I prefer for my own treatments. My studies were heavily focused on the construction of herbal formulations and I also attended an herbal intensive course with China’s foremost herbalists in Sichuan, China.
I have worked in multiple community acupuncture settings and enjoy treating pain conditions, chronic diseases, and emotional health concerns. I enjoy preventing disease as much as I do restoring health.
I am committed to treating all bodies with care, which means offering Health at Every Size medicine and acting to dismantle injustice in healthcare. I am passionate about providing exceptional and accessible care to all of my patients including patients who are queer, trans, and non-binary genders.
I earned a four years Master’s degree in East Asian Medicine (MSOM) at National University of Natural Medicine. I am a National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine certified diplomate and I am licensed to practice acupuncture by the Oregon Medical Board. Outside of work I enjoy typical Pacific Northwest hobbies like cooking and backpacking as well as weight lifting and caring for my two small children.
